Christmas Sale

is the total amount raised
for Sr. Bernadette Duffy

A huge "thank you" to all who supported the fund-raising event.
This money is going directly to help the children in the
Plastic View Settlement -
the area where Sr. Bernadette is working.

£3,230.00 was beyond our wildest dreams -
but when  a group of women get together,
dreams come true!

The ladies of the T.L.C. have worked so hard to raise this money
and are overwhelmed at the outcome.

They are continuing their Table Quizzes -
next one is on Sunday 29th November at 7.30pm
and all proceeds to the Parish.

Dear T.L.C.

This is outstanding for one evening - although I know all the hard work went before it.  From the bottom of my heart I express my deep gratitude to everybody who has contributed to make this sale of work a great success.  I go on Wednesday to Plastic View to record a short dvd so you can all have a better idea of what life is really like there!
Lots of love and prayers to everybody

Sr. Bernadette

04th November 2009

Dear Friends of T.L.C.

Hope my letter finds you all well.

I have enjoyed browsing the Tullylish website and viewing all the forthcoming events especially the Sale of Work to be held on 06th November.  The photograph displaying all the beautiful items looks great.  Mum and dad sent me some lovely photographs with all the knitted toys and I have displayed it in the sister’s dining room so that everybody sees what you are doing in order to raise funds for our children at the Informal Settlement.

The settlement consists of shacks made of plastic, tin and wood.  There is no running water or electricity.  There is a secondary school on the outskirts, no church, no clinic, no shops, except makeshifts one selling beer and fruit.  The rate of unemployment is so high that once you enter the settlement the first experience that hits you in the face is the number of people, men, women and youth all sitting around doing nothing!  The place is rife with drug dealing, crime, family violence, alcohol abuse, to mention a few.  Most of the children come from broken homes or child-headed households, because both parents have died of HIV/AIDS.

The Holy Cross Sisters runs a little crèche (also made out of tin).  The children are mostly orphaned and vulnerable and need as much protection as possible.  Each day the children under the age of seven go to the centre to get basic education and also a meal.  Later in the afternoon the older school children come to the centre to do homework and also get something to eat.  The sisters also run a sewing centre and a clinic.  Every thing is temporary in that the people come and go over night so it is difficult to follow up on treatment, etc.

On behalf of all our Sisters I deeply appreciate every effort you make to bring hope to the lives of these children.  I will get some photographs to keep you up to date with the happenings there!  In the meantime I wish you a successful and enjoyable ‘Sale of Work’!!  God bless

Sr Bernadette
